How to Find and Cut Wasted Google Ads Spend
The two-query method we run on every account audit to find wasted Google Ads spend, plus the negative keyword lists that stop it coming back.
Most Google Ads accounts waste 15 to 30 percent of their monthly budget on search terms and keywords that have never converted. Finding it takes two queries and about twenty minutes. Fixing it takes a negative keyword list and a weekly fifteen-minute review.
The two-query method
Pull these against the last 30 days of data.
Query 1: search terms with clicks and no conversions. Search terms report, filtered to 5 or more clicks and 0 conversions. Every row is money spent on a phrase that has never once turned into a lead or a sale in a month of data.
Query 2: keywords with real spend and no conversions. Keyword report, filtered to cost above R500 and 0 conversions in the same 30-day window. R500 with zero return is not noise. It is a keyword that needs a negative, a bid cut, or removal.
Add the cost columns from both queries together. That total is the wasted spend for the month. In most accounts we open for the first time, it is the single biggest number on the page, bigger than any bid strategy change or creative refresh could move in the same 30 days.
Why this happens
Search campaigns match broader than most account owners expect, especially on broad and phrase match. Google’s own auto-apply recommendations can also widen matching without anyone approving the change explicitly. Neither is a mistake so much as a default that needs a human checking it every week.
Build the negative keyword structure once
A one-time cleanup does not stay clean. The fix is a permanent structure.
Account-level shared list. One list of terms that should never trigger an ad regardless of campaign: things like free, download, template, how to, diy, job, jobs, vacancies, career, salary, wikipedia, meaning, definition, reviews only, complaints, class action. Apply it to every campaign in the account.
Service-line shared list. One list per distinct service or product line, for terms that are irrelevant to that specific offering but might be fine elsewhere in the account.
Campaign-level negatives. Reserved for terms that only apply to one specific campaign and nowhere else. This list should be short. If it is growing fast, the account-level or service-line lists are missing something.
The weekly review that keeps it clean
Twenty minutes, every week, same day:
- Pull the search terms report for the last 7 days.
- Any term with 3 or more clicks and 0 conversions gets reviewed by a human.
- Any term with 10 or more clicks and 0 conversions is added as a negative unless there is a clear reason not to.
That is the entire process. No dashboard, no tool subscription. A search terms report and fifteen minutes.

What this is worth
If an account spends R30,000 a month and 20 percent of it matches the wasted-spend definition above, that is R6,000 a month, or R72,000 a year, sitting in search terms that have never converted. Cutting it does not require more budget. It means redirecting the R6,000 already being spent into the keywords and search terms that already work.
Frequently asked questions
How much wasted spend is normal in a Google Ads account?
There is no single normal. Accounts that have never had a negative keyword review often show 20 to 30 percent. Well-maintained accounts with a weekly review in place usually sit under 10 percent, since the list keeps low-performing terms out proactively rather than reactively.
Will adding negative keywords reduce my traffic?
It reduces traffic that was never converting. Total click volume may drop. Conversion volume and cost per conversion should improve, because the same budget now reaches a narrower, more relevant set of searches.
How often should I check for wasted spend?
Weekly, using the 7-day search terms report. A monthly or quarterly review lets a low-performing term run for a full quarter before anyone catches it.
